I haven’t had my TV set tuned in for about seven years now and it wasn’t until I saw an online article about fan outrage at Coronation Street’s time-slot being taken over by a reality cooking show that I even knew that they had expanded from segments on shows such as Good Morning to Survivor-style shows that people love to watch. I can’t think of anything more boring than watching people cook or battling/having cooking wars, but one area of these types of shows does intrigue me: shows about patisseries and chocolatiers.

Choccywoccydoodah is a Brighton based cake shop that’s been around for 15 or so years. They produce exquisite and quite insane cakes to basically a celebrity cclientèle The cakes are out-of-this-world. They are completely made of the finest Belgian chocolate and I mean they are made totally of chocolate. Nothing but (well the cake part is sponge cake). Yes you read that correct. No fondant, no plastique and everything is hand made/sculpted and is held in place by chocolate! Staff have to sign a confidentiality clause when they work at the shop as they are pretty much the only people in the world doing what they do with chocolate.

Just in case that doesn’t impress you, the team did the chocolate for Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice In Wonderland. Furthermore their celebrity clients include Madonna, Hugh Grant, Bob Geldof, Kylie, Katie Price and the Scissor Sisters. I’m not really impressed by their clientele but rather the talented Dave and his apprentice Tom. These guys are amazingly talented and elevate cakes to works of art.

In this season the team make cakes for soap opera stars weddings, a love heart chocolate that weighs 25kg for Kylie Minogue, Tom makes a cake for Dave’s wedding, create cakes for charity, travel with a cake to France, create Halloween and Christmas window displays and make an awesome cake for Alice Cooper. Tom’s Christmas window display is amazing and the stag he creates weighs 70kgs. I am super impressed by his talent and the crazy Wonka-esque designs they come up with.

I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of reality TV purely because I think it brings out the worst aspects of American culture. That “me, me me” attitude, drama and average people thinking that they are celebrities and have actually contributed or created something good. The British counterparts to US reality shows always seem more sincere, realistic and I relate to the people better because they act like everyday people. Although I haven’t seen Cake BossAce of Cakes etc I just know that Choccywoccydoodah will be better because it’s about cakes and art not drama.

Would make an excellent gift for a bakers and cake lovers alike. No special features but there’s more than enough visual candy and you’re given an all access pass to the creative methods that any features would pretty much be filler material
