The Big Book of Porn: A Penetrating Look at the World of Dirty Movies

big-book

The Big Book of Porn: A Penetrating Look at the World of Dirty Movies by Seth Grahame-Smith is a glossy 208 paged tome that offers a “penetrating” (although very American/mainstream) look at porn.

The chapters include a brief history of porn flicks, a chapter on classics, a chapter on directors and actors (with mini bios), what to watch and where to find it; the atlas of porn (notable porno by country), a guide to making your own porno, a glossary, resources and a section dedicated to porn titles which include such charmers as: I Cream on Jennie, Dial M for Missionary and Lock Cock and Two Smoking Bimbos. Within each chapters are sub-sections dedicated to genres of porn, venues of porn, recommendations… it’s an encyclopaedia of porn. It’s also full of hot pictures (none too smutty) and movie posters.

Smith’s witty humour really makes the book interesting, from the dedication “ to that first sun-faded dirty magazine I found in the woods as a boy. I owe you so much…” to his guides on making porn and watching / finding it; the book is a safe way for porn-neophytes to learn all you can about (mainstream) porn.

He presents it in an easy guide format that makes it a fun read and I imagine would make the book appeal to a wider audience as it’s not smutty, although why you wouldn’t buy a book on porn because it’s smutty is beyond me. Kind of like Umbrella Entertainment’s version of Deep Throat that has all the sex censored, it just doesn’t make sense. I guess that is the trend these days, porn is becoming more mainstream and people no longer hate porn stars or look down upon them as much as they used to.

Ultimately it’s more coffee table material than a history book. A recommended purchase for those who are interested in the history of pornography, for hardened (excuse the pun) porn fans it might be a little rudimentary.

Available in paperback.
