Sean Weathers is a New York film maker, raconteur and podcast presenter with balls the size of grapefruits. I mean, he’s ‘presenting’ this collection, he directs and stars in one short film, he, along with cohort Aswad Issa, introduce two other classic b-grade films and he ‘stars’ in the final 4 minute short. That takes balls. And then he names his short film Maniac Too! I’m telling you he knows how to promote.
But what do you get for your buck? Well you get Abe Ferrara’s Driller Killer and the original George Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead (I’m guessing both are in the public domain) as podcast style films complete with intros from Sean and Aswad as they discuss their own film making and the movies, which is an interesting way to see some old favorites even if you do already have them.
Plus you get Weather’s own mini opus Maniac Too! (the exclamation mark is his) – 40 minutes of Sean raping and killing women with no attempt at real plot or development just half a dozen girls who were willing to get buck naked for ‘art’! A dark and disturbing piece of film that seems to be based on the real Maniac flick but without offering much more than the same set piece over and over. He stalks girls, he rapes them, he kills them, he seems to feel momentary remorse, he kills another one. The routine is broken up by having one girl tied up in his apartment (here’s one I prepared earlier) and a hooker/dancer in his lounge room while he looks almost as bored as I was by this point. The real lesson here is to never believe a guy who says he will make you a star.
Finally there’s Aswad Issa’s A Good Samaritan In New York, a quick 4 minute short where a guy on a subway interrupts a potential mugging, gets his face smashed in and that’s it. Seriously.
Look I don’t want to sound harsh because I like what these guys are trying to do and I appreciate where they are coming from but there’s more to making a film than just waving a camera and there’s more to horror than just the shock value. As presenters and fans they are obviously very knowledgeable and I guess the idea was to draw parallels between movies like Ferrara’s and their own gritty, low budget efforts but you have to walk before you can run. Actually, you know what, that’s pretty much the story here. These are the baby steps so maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on them.
Hell if nothing else you get a couple of old favorites on one disc and you get to say you were watching Sean Weathers back when he was just starting out (assuming both he and Aswad keep the passion burning). There are worse ways to spend your time.
