Adventure Time [Complete Second Season]

Adventure-Time-The-Complete-Second-Season-15529902-4Most people have heard of Adventure Time by now, but if you happen to be one of the willfully ignorant it’s a much-hyped animated series that airs on Cartoon Network. Despite being presented as a kids ‘toon, it has quickly gathered a “cult following” of teens & 20-something man-children, inspiring fan-fiction, cosplaying and all the money-grubbing merchandise you can think of.

The central plot revolves around the show’s protagonists Finn, a pre-teen boy, and Jake, a talking shape-shifting dog and their wacky adventures in the magical land of Ooo. On their travels they often come into contact with some of the various recurring characters such as Princess Bubblegum, Ice King, Lumpy Space Princess and Cinnamon Bun.

After seeing numerous ironic “geeks” wearing Adventure Time shirts, I already knew I’d hate it, so perhaps this review is slightly biased but I figured if that’s the target audience then it’s unlikely to appeal to me, and I was right. The humor is predominantly of the OMG, RANDOM!!! variety and while I cannot blame the black-framed glasses, skinny jeans-wearing, cupcake tattoo-generation for eating it up, it’s a little too puerile for my tastes… offense intended hipster scum!

But seriously, I can perhaps understand why some children would dig it for the colorful visuals and cutesy characters but once you’re old enough to “get” it, it just comes off as something created by a roomful of stoners to hook into the scene kid contingent with knowing references, talking sweets and a retro 8-bit soundtrack. If you are into more subversive and subtle animated/kids shows check out my recommendations.
