Zach Galifianakis Live at the Purple Onion

I loved Zach Galifianakis as Tairy Green in Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and Frisbee in Reno 911!, so was pretty excited to see how he fared as a solo comic. Who is Zach Galifianakis you ask? some of you also might recognise him as Alan from Todd Phillips’ The Hangover.

I was hoping that Zach’s stand-up would be as odd-ball as the characters from the shows he’s appeared in and I am happy to report that this is one of the most unique and awesome stand up acts I’ve seen in ages. It’s not a laugh-a-minute type gig and if you can‘t stand awkward, un-pc and just plain weird humour then you might want to rent this one first.

What’s most striking about the show is Zach’s style, it’s so free-form and disheveled, and soo fun to watch. He has an amazingly awkward and dry style – from his humour to his facial expressions and delivery. Zach painfully picks on an older man in the audience and utilizes the audience as part of his act which makes it even more fun for the viewer. Alongside his live stand-up act are pre-recorded interviews between Brian Ungo and his brother Seth (played by Zach), and clips of Zach and a friend driving around in a van.

He often plays piano throughout the set and ends the show by tearing off pages from a large pad in which he has pre-written self deprecating jokes, as this is happening there’s a choir singing the song The Greatest Love of All. It’s a show within a show, his gig is not simply comedy, its kinda like art or the theatre of cruelty and is incredibly enjoyable. I haven’t laughed this hard in ages. Galifiankais blends many comedic elements and if you put Andy Kaufman, Steven Wright, Bob Odenkirk, David Cross and some liquor in a blender then you’d probably get Zach Galafianakis.

As well as the live show there’s a few extras included on this set. There’s behind the scenes footage and outtakes, outtakes from the interview with ’Seth Galifianakis’, a segment where Zach shaves and an outtake titled ’The Awkward Slapping Bit’. A nice selection of extras that tops off an awesome show and honestly one of the funniest I’ve seen in ages.
